Nanofokus-Röntgenstreuung an komplex magnetoelektrischen Mikrokompositen

Complex magnetoelectric microcomposites consisting of quasi one-dimensional crystalline ZnO microrods coupled with a thin film layer of amorphous magnetostrictive (Fe90Co10)78Si12B10 are extensively studied via different X-ray techniques. The aim is to understand the mechanical interaction between the piezoelectric and magnetostrictive components at the shared interface. The coating process leads to an intrinsic strain in the order of 1E-4 within the ZnO crystal structure. The crystal structure at the interface is scanned using nano focused synchrotron radiation to spatially resolve the crystal in the order of the beam size up to 200 nm. This results in deformation profiles across the microrods. Due to coupling of the magnetostrictive layer with the piezoelectric phase the magnetically induced strain within the ZnO can be detected in situ inside an externally applied magnetic field. The magnetic field induces a strain in the order of 1E-5. The absolute value of local intrinsic and magnetic field induced interface strain increases exponentially as a function of a decreasing rod diameter. Coherent X-Ray diffraction imaging enables virtual reconstruction of the illuminated crystal and its crystal structure deformations within nanometer resolution. The amorphous thin film is studied via small angle and wide angle X-ray scattering in combination with the imaging methods of scanning electron microscopy and magneto optical Kerr-effect microscopy. The later allows the determination of the magnetic anisotropy of the metallic layer and its magnetization. The structure of the amorphous layer is described using X-ray scattering methods. The layer generates a characteristic powder diffraction pattern which is identified as elemental Fe crystallites with grain sizes of 6 nm. The small angle scattering reveals an additional layer at the interface. The iron in the layer seems to oxidate at the shared interface and creates a thin layer between 1 to 15 nm.
