AB Tuberculosis (Tb), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), is the single leading bacterial cause of death from infectious diseases worldwide. Tb therapy is complicated by an increase in antibiotic resistant Mtb strains and the lack of fast and specific diagnostic tools. The cell envelope of Mtb bacteria represents a major virulence factor and contributes to the intrinsic difficulties of eradicating the pathogen. However, the uniqueness of the Mtb cell envelope can also be seen as an advantage and could bear the chance to develop novel tuberculosis-specific diagnostic and therapeutic tools. In this thesis the unique features of the Mtb cell envelope were utilized to enrich mycobacteria from solution and to metabolically label different Mtb clinical isolates.
