4209 This thesis explores the concept of second-generation altmetrics to better assess the broad impact of research through digital interactions on social media platforms like YouTube and Wikipedia. It delves into the nuanced ways in which digital platforms influence research visibility and impact, proposing a more sophisticated approach that includes analyzing the behaviors, influence, and engagement patterns of those sharing and discussing scholarly content online. By examining the human-driven curation process on Wikipedia and the varied engagement with scientific content on YouTube, this work highlights the need for altmetrics to adapt to the diverse and dynamic nature of digital scholarly communication. The findings suggest incorporating factors such as awards and social media discussions as indicators of research impact, advocating for an expanded understanding of altmetrics that captures the complex interplay between scholarly content and the social media environment.
