The research questions are mainly addressed empirically using firm-level data from developing and emerging countries. This thesis is structured in the following four chapters, each representing a standalone paper. Chapter 2 adds insights to the debate about whether Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) represents a blessing for or an impediment to economic, social, and political development in FDI host countries by analyzing whether the presence of foreign investors impacts the occurrence of petty corruption. Chapter 3 also addresses the impact of foreign investment, but analyzes the effects of FDI on firm performance, more precisely on firms’ green management practices. Chapter 4 turns to the analysis of firms’ participation in global value chains (GVCs), more specifically, the role of GVC positioning for firms’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) investments. Finally, Chapter 5 goes beyond the role of voluntary corporate governance and analyzes whether mandatory changes in corporate governance affect firm performance. 4950 https://nbn-resolving.org/urn:nbn:de:gbv:8:3-2025-00156-8$xR$3Volltext$534 4961 https://macau.uni-kiel.de/receive/macau_mods_00005677 5051 330 5550 Corporate Responsibility 5550 Foreign Direct Investment 5550 Global Value Chains
