Carissa Aurelia and the Christianization of its territory : A historical/archaeological approach to the Guadalete Valley and the Sierra de Cadiz during Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages

We address the process of Christianization in the Guadalete Valley and the Sierra de Cádiz, with special attention to the territory of Carissa Aurelia, as a privileged observatory of the transition between the Roman world and the Early Middle Ages in the southwest of Hispania. The study analyzes changes in settlement patterns, the transformation of urban centers, and the consolidation of the bishopric of Asido (Medina Sidonia) as the political and religious capital of the region, refuting the supposed marginality of this territory. In the mid-7th century, the construction boom linked to Bishops Pimenio and Theodoracis, along with the monastic activity of Fructuosus of Braga, shaped an authentic landscape of holiness. Finally, the article interprets the evolution of Carissa Aurelia (from Roman civitas to a residual Christianized enclave) as a symbol of the adaptation of local communities to the political and religious transformations that preceded the eve of the Islamic conquest.
