The hinterland of Carissa Aurelia : Integrating old and new survey data

In contrast to other parts of ancient Baetica, the landscapes of the Guadalete River Valley have received relatively little scholarly attention. As part of a broader research project exploring the history of the Roman town of Carissa Aurelia, this paper discusses research into the hinterland of this city, defined as the land within a 10 km radius from it. The paper first reviews the evidence for rural settlement in this area, which consists of occasional observations, reports of rescue excavations and an unpublished systematic survey. Together, these sources provide an important dataset, but one that is also biased and disparate and can therefore not be considered representative. The paper then discusses the first results from a new intensive and systematic field survey in a transect cross cutting the hinterland. The 2024 survey focused on the direct surroundings of the city, and has identified many additional rural sites, including larger and smaller settlements, clusters of burials as well as small activity areas. By integrating these new data with the existing datasets, a more complete picture of past settlement and activities is gained. Most notably, the research shows that the necropoleis of the city were substantially larger than previously thought, and that areas in the river valley were exploited in a regular pattern from a series of large agricultural estates. The insights thus gathered inform future survey campaigns, and help build a representative image of the variable forms of settlement and exploitation within Carissa Aurelia’s wider hinterland.
