This article examines the artist’s house of Max H. Mahlmann and Gudrun Piper in Wedel near Hamburg, built between 1960 and 1962, as a combined living, working and memory space of a constructivist post-war avant-garde. Drawing on the artists’ biographies, their links to the Ulm School of Design and their participation in national and international exhibitions, it traces how theoretical debates on method, number and grid materialized in a serial, mathematically based œuvre. The house is interpreted as a spatial manifestation of this self-conception: a modest, Scandinavian-influenced ensemble of studio and dwelling with clear, graphic volumes, white brick surfaces, restrained colour accents and a multi-layered interior spatiality. The specific relation between work and domestic areas, the vertical organisation of the studios and the pictorial framing of views into the garden echo key artistic strategies of grid, cropping and window. Finally, the study highlights the house’s role as the main repository of the couple’s artistic estate and argues for its long-term preservation and recognition as a cultural monument.
