In situations of upheaval, observations of style reach their limits. The descriptions understand antagonisms of forms as conglomerates, expressions of the incomprehensible and thus as transitional phenomena. The supposedly ‘dissonant’ clash of conventional and contemporary forms overlooks the necessity of this process in a situation that is changing in terms of the history of form. The threat of loss of expression, of the power of traditional form, and thus also of meaning in terms of content, leads to the necessity of cancellation the past in the course of renewal. The problem area is thus located within the framework of the question of innovation and reception. From this perspective, the new choir buildings of Magdeburg and Caen before and after 1200 are comparable, as they are determined by their 10th/11th century burial sites, which retain their significance and must therefore find a formal balance between old and new. This balance, in which the formal citation plays a major role, is not a transitional phenomenon, but a conceptual issue that must be described as successful and original in both cases.
