The article deals with the development of event photography of the Cologne Rose Monday procession between 1890 and 1914, as documented in written and pictorial sources, with reference to photographic innovations that can be seen as a precondition for this new form of Rose Monday photography. It illuminates the topic using a written source on the work of the photographer Anselm Schmitz and photographs by August Kreyenkamp. Schmitz, who had previously been perceived by researchers primarily as a respected architectural photographer, used a new technique of the focal-plane shutter to take spontaneous pictures of the Rose Monday procession. Kreyenkamp photographed the 1914 Rose Monday procession in his more anecdotal style using glass negatives, which are kept in the Rheinisches Bildarchiv of the City of Cologne. His glass negatives are supplemented by photographic prints in the Historical Archive. Together, they document the carnival carriages Der Klüngel, Die Reklameschnüß and Dä städtische Sparbüggel with their ironic and humorous view of social phenomena in Cologne, which are still relevant today.
