The use of explanatory videos has become an integral part of mathematics learning for many students. In particular, freely accessible videos on platforms such as YouTube are frequently used to review classroom content and prepare for exams. At the same time, the subject-specific educational quality of such videos has been critically discussed in the literature. Against this background, the present dissertation investigates the subject-specific educational quality of mathematical explanatory videos on YouTube as well as their perception and effects on students’ learning gains. To this end, a topic-specific approach to quality assessment was developed that considers not only general subject-specific educational criteria but also topic-specific requirements. The concept of derivative was selected as an exemplary topic, as it represents a central concept in calculus and its acquisition poses substantial challenges for many students. The dissertation comprises two studies. In the first study, the subject-specific educational quality of explanatory videos on the concept of derivative was conceptualized and operationalized in the form of a topic-specific category system. Based on this system, 44 publicly accessible YouTube explanatory videos on the concept of derivative were analysed and evaluated. In addition, the relationship between video quality and platform metrics such as views, likes, and comments was investigated. In the second study, a quasi-experimental design was used to investigate the effects of the subject-specific educational quality of explanatory videos on students. The results reveal considerable heterogeneity in the subject-specific educational quality of the analysed explanatory videos, with topic-specific criteria being fulfilled less frequently in particular. At the same time, the findings of the second study support prioritizing high-quality explanatory videos for learning. Furthermore, individual learner characteristics may also influence both learning gains and students’ evaluations of the videos. Overall, the dissertation provides interesting insights into the quality, effects, and perceptions of mathematical explanatory videos.
