Several nonmacrocyclic and macrocyclic phenanthroline derivatives were synthesized using the Suzuki coupling between 2,9-dihalogeno-1,10-phenanthrolines and different phenylboronic acids. A phenanthroline with 2,6-disubstituted aryl bridgeheads carrying polyether chains was synthesized which can now be part of an allosteric host-guest-system together with Cu(I) ions and bipyridine derivatives. It was possible to synthesize monomacrocyclic phenanthrolines of different ring sizes starting from 4-substituted phenylboronic acids via Suzuki coupling and ring closing metathesis. Bimacrocyclic systems were built from 2,4-disubstituted phenylboronic acids using the same strategy. After hydrogenation, these mono- and bimacrocyclic molecules were tested as ligands in cyclopropanations of indene for stereoselectivity. A basic system for phenanthrolines with 2,3-disubstituted bridgeheads was built starting from 2,3-dimethoxyphenylboronic acid. The use of 2,3-bis(alkenyloxy)-phenylboronic acids resulted only partly in diaryl substituted phenanthroline. Furthermore, a precursor for 2,3,4-trisubstituted phenylboronic acids was synthesized. With these molecules it should be possible to synthesize further bimacrocyclic phenanthrolines for use in metallocatalysis. By stepwise use of both 2,6-disubstituted and 2,4,6-trisubstituted phenylboronic acids, it was possible to prepare a precursor for bifunctional concave phenanthrolines. The bimacrocyclic structure was formed via ring closing metathesis. After coupling with an additional molecule, for instance with an acid functionality, the resulting bimacrocyclic phenanthroline can be used in organo catalysis.
