Contribution of Conservation Agriculture to Household Welfare in Ghana

Climate variability and soil degradation pose numerous risks to agricultural production and impede economic growth and sustainable development. Achieving food security and improved nutrition while promoting sustainable agriculture has become a major challenge for policymakers, especially in SSA. Current food production systems have become more dependent on the use of external inputs and intensive approaches in addressing the growing food demand. These practices tend to degrade the environment and threaten the proper functioning of the ecosystem services with possible negative consequences on soil fertility, global food and nutrition security, and poverty. Several pieces of evidence suggest that conservation agriculture has the potential to increase resilience and sustainability of the food systems, stimulate inclusive growth whilst reducing the emission of greenhouse gases emanating from agricultural systems. To promote sustainable adoption of these technologies, a comprehensive study of the drivers, opportunities, and constraints associated with its adoption is required. Thus, this study contributes to the growing empirical literature by examining the contribution of conservation agriculture on household welfare among smallholder farmers in Ghana. The findings of the study will support policy processes and re-orient farming systems in a manner that facilitates, rather than hinders, the transition to conservation agriculture in order to improve the livelihoods of low-income farm households and build the resilience of the agrifood systems, especially under a changing climate.
