A valency-typological and morphological study of communication verbs in the Qur'an

The study explores correlations between the morphological form, semantic properties, and valency of communication verbs in Qur’anic Arabic from a typological perspective. The main objectives are twofold. First, to identify and verify the functions of Arabic verbal derivational patterns, and second, to determine whether and in which ways semantic principles control participant encoding.

The study ties in with the ongoing discussion on the nature and function of derivational morphemes in Arabic and proposes a multifunctional approach to derivation morphology that searches for semantic links between the different attested functions of a derivational morpheme. Furthermore, by identifying the governing principles behind participant encoding with communication verbs, it contributes to the valency-typological research and research on transitivity and grammatical relations. In addition, as the study also elaborates on the semantic structure of morphologically basic (underived) and derived communication verbs, it is also of great relevance for the research on the structure of the communication domain in the lexicon.
