Russia Made Great Again : The Chechen Wars and the North Caucasian Conflict as Foundation of New Russian Grand Power Politics
The Russian Federation could not aspire to even win back some of the power and influence at a global scale held by the late Soviet Union without being able before to subjugate tiny but rebellious Chechnya. Thus, the research hypothesis states that the satisfactory outcome of the North Caucasian conflict between 1994 and 2013 has been the necessary foundation for the revival of grand power politics the Kremlin has been exercising since. These questions will be approached theoretically through the realist lens of geopolitical theory. Thus, this project will result in a study located in the field between the poles of political science and history. The outcome is intended to serve as a reference to assess past and present circumstances concerning the ongoing conflict in the North Caucasian region. The resulting study is also intended to represent a valuable addition to research on Islamic and jihadi movements. It shall contribute to broadening the research horizon to a more differentiated approach to this topic, which presently overemphasizes transnational terrorism through the Western-sided lens of the Global War on Terror, a fact which is misleading experts as well as public opinion, thus contributing to an undifferentiated view on radical Islam. In macro-historical terms, however, aside from the answers to the research questions will emerge, but the nature of today´s Russia as well, since its soul is inextricabily tied to events and the struggle in the North Caucasus – since centuries. One thing however is for sure: Being still entrenched by its own nature in the hyper-realist view of geopolitics, Russia has been employing both covert and openly violent means to achieve its goals – and it will continue to do so. This is a very important outcome of this research work which should be mede very clear to every Western decision-maker.
