Imaging European mantle structure using teleseismic body wave arrival times from an automatic picking algorithm
This thesis presents a complete process for seismic waveform data analysis culminating in a global model for seismic velocities in the mantle, down to a depth of 1000 km. The extraction of seismic phase arrival times from individual waveform recordings is of central importance to this process. A new algorithm is presented to perform this extraction in a fully automated process, which makes it possible to analyse large data sets consisting of millions of recordings. This algorithm is applied to a global data set of recordings taken between 1990 and 2019. The resulting arrival times are the basis for a tomography of the mantle, yielding 3D velocity models for the propagation speeds of seismic P- and S-waves.
