Reduction of ammonia emissions by applying a urease inhibitor in dairy livestock systems

REDUCE – sustainable, animal and environmentally friendly cattle farming by reducing ammonia emissions using a urease inhibitor In Germany most of the ammonia emission is produced by the agriculture industry, especially in modern cattle husbandry. Based on national and international guidelines, Germany aims to reduce the national ammonia emission level. Therefore, the objective of the project “REDUCE – sustainable, animal- and environmentally friendly cattle farming by reducing ammonia emissions with a urease inhibitor” is to investigate the effect of a urease inhibitor under practical conditions in dairy barns. Based on the results of previous studies, it can be assumed that the urease inhibitor has the potential to reduce ammonia emission. This will be tested under practical conditions (i.e. three dairy barns). To avoid possible influences (e.g. weather) the test periods take place throughout all seasons (spring/autumn, summer and winter), each at a time of two measurement periods. The trial procedures are according to the test protocols of Vera and KTBL. Besides testing the effect of the inhibitor on reducing the ammonia emission, further positive side effects are higher nutrient values of the fertilizer and a positive impact on the animal health.
